Far East Russia is the extreme eastern territory of Russia, situated between Lake Baikal in Eastern Siberia and the Pacific Ocean. There are many isolated villages in this region that can only be reached by boat or plane.
It was as recently as 2000, that the Russian Far East was given official boundaries. Prior to that, the term "Siberia and the Far East" was used to refer generally to regions east of the Urals.
Gold and platinum were discovered in Far East Russia at the time of Russia's industrial revolution under Stalin. As prisoners were in plentiful supply, labour-camps were set up in the remote, frozen region of Kolyma.
A project to build the town of Magadan began in 1932, and expeditions continued. Under gruelling forced-labour, prisoners created the "Kolyma Highway" which was to become known as the "Road of Bones". Eventually, about 80 Gulag camps dotted the region.
Kolyma became the most notorious region for Gulag labour-camps. Tens of thousands or more people may have died en route to the area or in the Kolyma's series of gold mining, road building, lumbering, and construction camps between 1932 and 1954.
In 2016 the Russian Parliament launched an Anti-Missionary Law, severely limiting the preaching of the Gospel. It marks the beginning of a new era of serious oppression of the churches that Christ has been building in Russia.
SGA was there to support underground believers during the Soviet era, and once again will do everything possible to reach Far East Russia with the Gospel - before it's too late.
To this end, the SGA board has adopted an exciting new burst of evangelism - Reach Russia Now. This is a unique and unprecedented opportunity with a major threat hanging over it. It is imperative to do as much as possible in the time available before the door closes once again.
Your timely gift now will help us join together with the churches we serve to seize the incredible Gospel opportunities God has granted - in the face of whatever the enemy tries in opposition. Through Reach Russia Now, your gift will help:
